How can I determine good accuracy and precision on my chemistry homework?
Two electronic balances are tested using a standard weight. The true mass of the standard is 1.0000g. THe results of the 5 individual measurements on each balance are recorded below.
Balance A: 0.8888g, 0.9959, 1.1182, 1.0033, 0.9938 g = an average of 1.000g
Balance B: 1.3110, 1.3109, 1.3111, 1.3110, 1.3110 = an average of 1.3110 g
Which statement best describes the results

A is accurate but not precise as the numbers are not consistent but average out close to the correct (known) mass. the second has very good consistent/repeatable (precise) results but is very inaccurate.

The weighing pans of analytical balance are placed inside a transparent enclosure with doors to protect it from dust particles and air currents from affecting the readings. Analytical balance has exceptional acrylic airfoils which allow a smooth airflow and it can measure even small masses as little as 1 micro gram with absolute precision. Analytical precision is achieved by maintaining a constant load on the balance beam, by subtracting mass on the same side of the beam to which the sample is added. The final balance is achieved by using a small spring force, rather than subtracting fixed weights. This allows the weight to be added as a fine adjustment.
Analytical balances can have various shapes and sizes and are used to compare the mass of two sets of objects. Many factors like temperature, humidity, vibration and ventilation can affect its performance. Hence it is important to keep these balances inside an enclosed space and keep it level and clean at all times.
