diamond engagement ring has new spot in it?
my engagement ring is a family heirloom and when i got it it had no flaws in it. it's been passed through 3 people (me being the third) and i had to get it re-sized and cleaned when i first got it in january. (ive been engaged for 2 years but finally got a nice ring) also one of the prongs was loose which they fixed. but i have recently started noticing a flaw. and i know it was not there before. i have inspected this thing with a magnifying glass. its got a dark grey spot in it. could it be from where they fixed or cleaned it? i don't remember it being there after i got it back from the jeweler. the ring appraises at alot because it is older and flawless. its also a full caret. but the flaw in it worries me...do diamonds get flaws the older they get or no? could something have happened to it?
Oh no! I hope it wasn't a diamond swap like some of the people answering have suggested.
When my wife and I had to take her ring for a prong adjustment, I brought the original certificate and 20x loop and examined the diamond in front of the jeweler to show him that the inclusion I saw through the loop matched the certificate.
It was just my anal way letting him know that I am verrry familiar with my wife's diamond. He took out his magnifying loop and compared it too. So we were both on the same page that the diamond we brought into the store matches the certificate.
3 days later, when we got the diamond back, the jeweler and I compared the diamond to the certificate once more. Everything matched.
If your case isn't a diamond swap, please understand that diamonds are grease magnets. Try taking a very soft baby's toothbrush with some liquid Dawn and clean the diamond under hot water. Then rinse with distilled water.
Very important to use *distilled* water because tap water has minerals and tends to spot up on the diamond.
It's very rare that a diamond would get damaged by heat or mechanical stress since diamonds are a very hard substance. However, the girdle of a diamond, if it's thin, is very vulnerable to chipping.
You didn't mention if the spot you see is near the girdle or table.
